LofN is under the Open Publication License

Posted 31 January 2012, 5:27 AM
Greetings,

I have aways been a fan of open movements such as the open source movement, and have always desired to make Legends of Nor'Ova game material and publications open for use, modification, and the like. The issue has simply been which of the open licenses would best put forward this principle while at the same time protecting the original work of the Legends of Nor'Ova/Legacy Games…

Legacy Games Store Subscription Rates

Posted 04 April 2012, 5:15 PM

Greetings,

The Legacy Games Store isn't a real shopping-cart type store per say, but a means of supporting this website and the RP here and getting something in return. In the Legacy Games Store, you can purchase what are called Membership Subscriptions. These Subscriptions give you many different gifts as a way of saying thanks!

The Legends of Nor'Ova Society is a special member group that allows you to:
[*]Download the Legends of Nor'Ova Core Rule Book, anytime you want as many times as you want[/*] [*]Have access to upgrades and revisions to the Core Rule Book[/*] [*]Offical downloads that would normally cost an extra fee[/*] [*]More Member Points per day to use for the Saga of Ablution RPG[/*]
You will have all of these things for as long as you are a suscribing member to this group. Other functions and features may open up as well that may become available to you before anyone else. By being a sucscribing member you are helping to support and pay for hosting costs and other fees that come with hosting this site.

Basically, with this you get increased daily visit member points and access to the Official Downloads section (and other special group download sections) of the site for the duration that you keep your subscription. This allows you to make as many downloads of any material that is in there as you want, including the Legends of Nor'Ova Core Rule Book, including new editions should they come out while your subscription is still active.

The costs are as follows:
  • The Legends of NorOva Society: This is a yearly subscription plan. It costs $25.00 per year, which is a one time annual payment. This equals around $2.09 a month.
  • NorOvan Society Half Year Plan: This is a 6 month subscription plan (renewing every 6 months). It costs $15.00 which is a one time bi-annual payment. This equals around $2.50 a month or $30.00 a year.
  • The NorOvan Society Monthly Plan: This is a monthly subscription plan that renews every month. It costs $5.00 a month. This equals to $60.00 a year. It is more expensive than the other plans if you keep renewing it for an entire year, however you can cancel it sooner without worry of lost money.
  • Legends of Nor'Ova Core Role Playing Book: This is a plan that simply gives you access to the Official Downloads for 24 hours. It costs $20.00 and is good only if you want to download the book and only want 1 day access to do so.

I hope that this helps to make clear the whole Legacy Games Store and Membership Subscriptions costs. Please note that right now our annual costs are $145.00. As of late, a large majority of this has been out of pocket for me. So any contribution through use of the Legacy Games Store would be really helpful and appreciated.

But please, don't feel like you have to buy a subscription! The Legends of Nor'Ova website is free for anyone who wants to participate and the Saga of Ablution forum-based RP is also free, and always will be! Your subscription just helps with costs, and for that you get the book!

Website Upgraded - Please Read

Posted 30 March 2012, 10:05 AM

Greetings,

The software that our website uses, ocPortal, has recently released a new version. In other words, an upgrade to the version we were running.

This upgrade boasts many new features, bug fixes, and security fixes. So in order to continue to provide you all with the best website experience that I can, I have went through the long and painful process of upgrading the site and fixing any major issues that come from doing that.

There are some minor changes to the software that you as members need to know about. I will list them here for you.

1.) The old tags for hide and such are no longer visible above the full editor screen. Instead, those buttons have been made as part of the editors buttons. You will notice them as the last set of buttons.

2.) The forums now have a rating scheme. You will notice up and down thumbs on the top bar of every post that is not yours. Voting on that will change that bar to show stars and your avatar (very small pic of it anyways) which can indicate who made such a vote/rating.

3.) With this new upgrade, they have gotten rid of the separate "Personal Zone" and "Member Profile" views. They did this to simplify things, changing the member profile page to one using tabs for all important functions. As a result, the top menu link, "Personal Page" has been removed as it would link to a 404 page. The way into your member profile exists under your avatar, as shown in this image…

11 views (29 Kb)
» Download: member profile link.png (29 Kb, 11 downloads so far)

4.) The member profile page has underwent some changes. The largest of which is the use of tabs. Now there are tabs for different functions of the member page, such as your posts, your blog, your Personal Topics inbox, and editing your profile. This should make things simplier. Here are some images to show what I mean:

Attachment
member profile 1
11 views (243 Kb)
» Download: member profile 1.png (243 Kb, 11 downloads so far)

Attachment
member profile tabs

» Download: member profile tabs.png (8 Kb, 11 downloads so far)

Attachment
member profile 2
13 views (203 Kb)
» Download: member profile 2.png (203 Kb, 13 downloads so far)

5.) A new button will appear in the forum threads view. This button reads "linear" and basically, it switches from flat view to threaded view and vice versa. It is of my belief that we should keep things in flat view to keep things simple, but the choice is yours.

There are of course other changes, many of which you may never notice. But hopefully knowing about these changes listed here will help you. Also do note that there may still be some small bugs or other issues. If you find them, feel free to let me know.

Character Spreadsheet Template Challenge

Posted 19 March 2012, 2:01 PM
Greetings Fellow Nor'Ovans!

Are you confident in your character making skills or would you like to practice making new characters? Want to contribute to the site and earn some massive member points?

Well here is your chance!

Announcing our first ever LofN Contest

Character Spreadsheet Template Challenge

Purpose:

The purpose of this contest is to obtain several different quick-start character profiles. These would be pre-completed character templates that new and current members can download at a point cost. Giving the option of several different character types, with the hard work already done and basic stats set-up, should make it easier and quicker for new members to get started as well as current members to pick up an additional character if they so desired. This would or could also serve as a means for storymasters to get/create NPC's for their plots.

The Contest:

The contest is simply for you members to submit via personal topic as an attachment, a completed character profile template. If your template gets chosen, you will earn right away 150 member points that you can use at the point store for your character needs. You will also receive the credit for the downloadable template, with it set up so that when a member spends the points to get this template, you would get a certain percentage of the point costs as a reward.

You would also gain invaluable practice and experience at character creation and how the system works. This would help to make you feel more comfortable with the whole process, thus more confident and able to approach the game better. This experience will also help you be able to help new members when they have character creation questions!

You would not be spending any points in these character templates you create (at least any of your own points) so you would be free to experiment with different ideas and not have to worry about messing up!

As this is a real need, there isn't a set deadline for this contest yet, nor is there a set limit for how many templates you are allowed to create! So have fun with it! And do not be afraid to submit them or ask questions!

The Prize:

  • 150 instant member points if your profile is chosen
  • Fame and credit for your template
  • Invaluable experience and practice at making characters and working with the system
  • My most humble appreciation for helping me fulfil a very real need on this site

Instructions:

  • Download a character spreadsheet, either from the Saga of Ablution Downloads or the Creating a Character instruction page
  • Make a character template.
    • Leave the character name field blank.
    • In the "Player" field, you would put what type of character template you would consider this as (ie: fighter, warrior, healer, etc…). If you aren't sure, this too can be left blank.
    • Complete the rest of the character profile as you would normally when making a character, including race, runic element, stats, skills, equipment, and inventory.
    • Remember that all new characters get 400 stat points, 50 skill points, and 200 shillings to be used for creating a new character.
      • You can use up to 400 additional member points when making these character templates.
      • These member points aren't really yours, you'd just keep track of how many extra member points you'd spend in the Point Store for skill points, stat points, and shillings - making a note of this for the character template.
      • You won't yourself spend any real points in the point store, this would just show how many member points would have been spent to make this character. Please keep a note of this as this will affect the cost of the template (as in cost of points).
      • Remember, do not "spend" more than 400 member points, new members only have 400 member points when they first join so they wouldn't be able to spend more than that.
  • When you have the character profile completed, save it. The filename could be the type of character it is (fighter, healer, etc) or something else to indicate that it is a character template.
  • When you are ready to submit the template, start a personal topic (PT) with me (mythus). Title the PT as "Character Spreadsheet Template Challenge Username's Submission" (where Username = your member name).
    • Include in the message how many member points would be spent to make this character.
    • Attach your character template submission using the "Attachments" function of the forum.
    • If you wish to submit more than one template, submit each in the same PT thread, but in separate posts.
Please do note that you can only participate in this contest if you use an office suite (preferably LibreOffice) and complete this on your computer. That way you can attach it as a downloadable file. You would not be able to use website based spreadsheet hosts such as EditGrid for this contest.

Closing Remarks:

I do hope each and every one of you will participate and make several submissions! I hope that it will be a fun experience and that you will gain much from it! It is a great way to help me with the site and provide a very valuable resource for new and old members alike! The profile templates that you submit will be a huge help for any new or current member who wants to make a new character but either struggles with the process or wants to get a character up and going quickly!

If anyone has any questions about this contest and its instructions, please do ask! Either post a reply here, reach me via IM, or send me a PT.

So lets all work together to make this a fun and worthwhile contest that will in the end make this site and RP all the more better!

Saga of Ablution Skills Page Redone + Download Added

Posted 19 March 2012, 9:41 AM

Greetings,

I have redone the Skills page for the Saga of Ablution RP. Basically, I made a table (catalogue) of the skills. This will hopefully prove useful as you could search through it, expand to view just the single skill, and it will provide a means of adding to the skills (even for members) and for staff to easily edit single skills (versus a whole table).

I have also added an upload in the Saga of Ablution Downloads. This is a spreadsheet of all Saga of Ablution skills. It is not a spreadsheet of all skills found in the Legends of Nor'Ova Core Rule Book, but only of all skills freely available here on site. There are 354 skills so yeah, it's a good bit.

This spreadsheet includes filtering in the headings so you could, for example, filter out the skills to show only those that have no prerequisites.

Being in a spreadsheet, it would be easy to copy/paste the info to your character spreadsheet.

And finally, having the spreadsheet gives you another means of searching through the available skills if you don't already have the book. Of course, the book has even more skills :P.

I am considering doing the same thing for the equipment lists. I am thinking this will make things better/easier for everyone in the long run.

Ultimate Skills Sheet

Posted 05 October 2011, 6:42 AM
Greetings,

A new download was added to Community Created Downloads. This is the Ultimate Skills Sheet.

Description said

This is the complete edition 2 skills listing in spreadsheet format. This includes sortable filters, and can easily be inserted into the edition 2 character spreadsheet. It includes fields for imputing your mastery % and marking upgrades.

This was created by beta tester and player Robin Vick, using the edition 2 Skills Draft file. This is an Excel spreadsheet (xlsx) made using Microsoft Office 2010. It is compatible with Libre Office (just tested it), and presumably Open Office. - mythus

In order to access this download, you need to have either bought the book (which would give you the "Supporter" title) or be a paying member of the Nor'Ovan Society premium membership (bearing the "Nor'Ovan title).

Added New Material to the Offical Downloads

Posted 04 October 2011, 3:21 PM

Greetings,

I have uploaded new material to the Official Downloads. This material is obtainable only to those who have a paid Nor'Ovan Society membership. The added material is:

  • Magic and Offense Modifications module
  • Edition 2 Skills Draft module
  • Character Spreadsheet (edition 2 ods format - for the book)
  • Character Spreadsheet (edition 2 excel format - for the book)
  • Ascian Ruins Excavation Site Dungeon Map (level 1)
More material will be added as it becomes available. This of course includes the already present Legends of Nor'Ova Core Rule Book.

The Nor'Ovan Society is a special paid for subscription group. Basically it allows you to help support the site, helping to cover hosting costs and domain name costs, while giving you access to material that you can't find elsewhere. Consider this basically a "thanks for help with server costs, ensuring that the site will stay online, as a way of saying thanks, here's some stuff, and the book itself!" type of thing. If you like this site, want the LofN book and related material, then you can subscribe to the Nor'Ovan society, paying a small monthly fee, and gain access to unlimited downloads of LofN material as well as more points to use for your character. There are yearly, half year, and monthly subscription options available.
